Multiple examples of collaborations between researchers and craftspeople have lead to technological and social innovations, but they diserve better visibility, for their often unexpected but nevertheless beneficial impact on craftspeople, their productions or their environment. As we strongly believe the outputs of such collaborations could be leveraged in other fields, it is of outmost importance for Kyoto University to continue diffuse its research results into society and there is a strong will to share, with all the stakeholders, solutions that address real world issues.

With the Craft x Science x Impact Initiative, Kyoto University wants to put a new light on researchers engaged in projects that aim at solving the Traditional Crafts ecosystem issues, or at enriching our knowledge of Culture and Society through research on Cultutal Artefacts, by developing a network of partners that want to onboard a journey of multi-discipline, multi-opinion-fed research, and deliver together solid evidence that crafts and science are meant to work together to generate creative, practical and beneficial outcomes.

By becoming a platform that promotes and gives access to these projects, Kyoto University, through the Craftx Science x Impact Initiative, commits to encourage collaborations between craftspeople, researchers and entrepreneurs, with the conviction that they will drive a new technological and social innovation force, as well as generate new stories that we can bring to society.
Ideas are meaningless if they are not shared and transformed into valuable things for society.
As a playground where to freely explore and test ideas, the initiative aims at giving birth to sustainable, applicable solutions to support the Japanese Traditional Craft Industry’s ecosystem and the global society.
Inviting the creative minds of the craftspeople, the researchers and the entrepreneurs, the initiative provides a place for discussion to make the worlds meet and make innovation emerge.
CONNECT people who CO-CREATE solutions that DELIVER impact in real world.
